Introduction to Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in Laos (Part 2)

Special Economic Zone (SEZ) is a haven for investors, in which the business and trade regulations are different from the regular economic zone, levitating trade balance, employment, increased investment, job creation, and effective administration. As Laos determined to graduate from the least developed country, these SEZs are the driving force to the prosperity in the country. Currently, there are 11 SEZs in Laos operating across the country, as well as open to general and promotional investment. In this article, we'll look into another five SEZs in Laos that are erected and currently in development.

7. Thatluang Lake Specific Economic Zone

Nearby the famous That Luang Stupa, established in 2011, set to be the Embassy Cultural Area,  Financial and Business Area, and residential areas, as well as five-star hotels, shopping centers, entertainment venues, and administrative center. The project covered six villages in Xaysettha and Sisattanak districts. Taking about 365 hectares for the area, developing by the private Chinese company with the total investment of $1,600,000,000. Developers and investors have spent more than $306 million and currently attracted 36 companies to invest and develop their businesses in the zone. This SEZ set to be completed in 2030.

8. Longthanh – Vientiane Specific Economic Zone

Located along 450 Year Road in Vientiane Capital, with the first Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge nearby and 16 km from the center of the capital. Another full investment from the foreign company, this time it is a Vietnam with a total investment of $1,000,000,000. The investment projects are range from golf course, hotel and apartment service, International School, etc.

 

9. Dongphosy Specific Economic Zone

 

 

 

Also located along 450 Year Road in Vientiane Capital, established in 2009, developing by a Malaysian Company, with 53.94 hectares and a total investment of $50,000,000. The investment projects are focusing on commercial, industrial, residential, and institutional.

 

10. Thakhek Specific Economic Zone

 

 

Located in Khammuan Province, where the third Lao-Thai Friendship bridge set, established in 2012, developing 100% by the government of Laos, taking 1,035 hectares for the area with a total investment of $80,000,000. The investment projects are range from trade, accommodations, transport station, Education and Public Health Area and Forestry Preservation and Green Area. The zone also provides Tax exemption for importing equipment and raw materials for infrastructure construction, reduce income tax and VAT, right to reside in Lao PDR with family during a time of investment and land concession up to 75 years, with the possibility of extension

 

11. Pakse – Japan SME Special Economic Zone

 

 

The most recent SEZ in Laos, placed in Champasak Province, developed by the incorporation of five organizations: Lao National Committee for SEZ, Champasak Province SEZ, Xaysana Group, Savan TVS Consultant Co., Ltd and Nishimatsu Construction Co., Ltd. (JAPAN). This SEZ solely investing in Industrial and Service Zone. This SEZ provides an exemption of corporate income tax for the first 2-10 years, import duty of product manufacturing machinery. Personal income tax and dividend tax will be collected at the rate of 5%. The investors will be granted support from the local authority and the government.
